-----------------------------------

The start of the World Cup qualifiers in the CAF region gives Zimbabwe a chance at redemption after a very poor showing at the COSAFA Cup recently. They will open their qualification campaign with a home game against South Africa in Harare, seeking a first win in six matches. They are coming from back to back losses to Namibia and Senegal, while their only win in the last 12 matches was against Botswana in March. They’ve conceded at least two goals in four of their last five matches and failed to score in half of their last 10 games. In those 10 games, they’ve scored more than one goal in just two, with four producing over 2.5 goals. The hosts go into this game with just two wins in 15 World Cup qualifying matches. This is the first competitive meeting they will have with South Africa since 2001. Back then, they met in the 2002 World Cup qualifiers, and South Africa beat them home and away and went on to qualify for the tournament in Japan/Korea.

The last time these two nations faced off was in 2013, in a friendly match that Zimbabwe won 2-1. Zimbabwe had also beaten South Africa 2-1 in a 2011 friendly match, while South Africa had wins in 2010 and 2008. All the four matches were friendly, and South Africa have the edge when it comes to competitive matches. They also have the better run going to this game, coming from a triumph over Senegal in the COSAFA Cup final and boasting a seven-game unbeaten run. South Africa have six clean sheets in seven matches ahead of this and only one loss in 11 matches. They have missed the last two World Cup finals and in their recent run, they will see this as an opportunity to start the journey brightly. The last time they faced Zimbabwe in the qualifiers, they graced the final tournament. This time, they hope to improve on a run of four losses in the last five World Cup qualification matches.
